Where Have all the Retail Jobs Gone?
I received this correspondence from Jim Chadbourne, managing partner of Global ESG. I wanted to make sure I shared this information with all of those that have Retail experience and may be discouraged.
News reports on the retail industry are full of doom and gloom. Last year the retail industry lost 468,000 jobs. Yet that still leaves more than 15 million people working in the retail industry. Apparel stores cut 17,600 jobs in November. But that’s only about one percent of the workforce. Department stores cut 3,500 positions in November. But, that’s just two-tenths of a percent of the 1.47 million people who are currently employed by department stores.
Some retailers are closing shop. Last year, Linens-N-Things closed; Circuit City and KB Toys will be closing this year. We wish all these retail employees who have been, or will be laid off in the near future, all the best in finding new jobs in the retail industry.
But don’t be discouraged. There is a tremendous turnover in the retail industry. There will be several million new jobs available in retail during 2009. AllRetailJobs.com lists more than 30,000 jobs and we receive thousands of new job opportunities each week. We advise candidates to brush up on your resumes, review available jobs and send in your applications. Prior retail industry experience is a great qualifying attribute. Stay motivated!
In a conversation that I had with the owner of AV Answers, Fred Hartman, added fuel to this positive fire…Fred feels that as Americans, we are addicted consumers. We just can’t seem to quit spending money. With that being said, we discussed that the retail space will never go away and will even rebound back to normal consumption soon. Keep motivated.
