Phone Interview Not To’s

phonePhone interviews are tough.  Since 70% of human communication is non-verbal, I would have to agree that phone interviews can become challenging if not handled correctly.

In a recent blog post, 10 Quick Phone Interview Tips, I outlined the best preparatory tips in nailing a phone interview.  I had a quick conversation (emphasis on quick because the person interviewed that poorly) and took some notes on things not to do.

I called, introduced myself and the person said, “I don’t know what you want so I’ll just talk and you can just stop me” This is probably not the way any phone conversation should start.  The next thing out of this person’s mouth was, “I got laid off from my last job about a year ago and have been picking up freelance work since then.”

Stop right there…hind site is 20/20 but it is a GREAT idea to ask a question, especially if you are nervous.  If this person could have asked a question, it would have given them time to settle down, listen and then gather thoughts on how to sell oneself.  This person asked me the first question 9 minutes and 20 seconds into the conversation.  Guess what the question was…“where are you located?” Again with clear vision, bad question.

How could this phone interview gone better?

  1. Always be prepared for that phone call, it can come when least expected (have your elevator pitch ready, know what you want, know your personal features and benefits)
  2. Ask a question in the first minute of the phone call.  Try this question,”I understand that you are looking for an SEO Specialist, what does that mean to you?” OR “Tell me a little about your firm / your company”
  3. As opposed to saying right off the bat, “I got laid off”, how about, “As a Creative Director, I have had a depth of experience over the years including working with some of today’s biggest brands…” (keep it 45 seconds in length)
  4. Have a list of questions prepared

What are your thoughts on improving this phone call?

I wish you Much Success.
