Interview Questions – Spill Your Guts!
How does an interviewee properly answer interview questions?
Do you ever feel like Chunk confessing to the Fratellis? This post is geared toward those preparing for an interview. I have been exposed to proper interviewing techniques since early 2003 and involved myself in a minimum of 20 interviews per week for the last 5+ years, that is over 5200 attempts to answer the simple ice breaking question:
“So, John Doe, tell me about yourself?”
Believe me, I have seen and heard some incredible sometimes long winded answers to that meaningless one liner.
Hint #1 Don’t loose your lunch on the interviewer by telling your whole life story. How do you know what to say? Are they wondering about my career? my last job? my hobbies? my family? my experience at fat camp? my political views? or do they want to know my take on the Tribe?
Hint #2 It is OK to ask for clarification. “Sure, I would love to tell you about myself…what exactly do you want to know?”
Know where you are on the field. If the score is tied and it is 4th down and 2 in the first quarter or if it is 4th and 2 in the fourth quarter with 30 seconds left more than likely you will run a different play. Know where you are on the field. Know how to answer certain questions. When you know what the interviewer is looking to hear, then you have a much better shot at getting the answer right. Just a thought.
Hint #3 It is OK to study before and interview. This is where the American tradition of living by the Boy Scout motto is cool: “Be Prepared”
