"I" in the 10 Key Interviewing T.E.C.H.N.I.Q.U.E.S.

I is for Interest, the thing that makes you tickle inside.

This can be expressed in two ways…
Expressing your interest in the position
· It is OK to be interested in the position that you are interviewing for. Some people put on the “I’m too cool to show interest” cloak or the “I don’t want to get my hopes up”, oh ok…would you rather just stay down and depressed about gas prices? Get excited about something!
· Ask for the position. Get it into your interviewing vocabulary book to say, “I am very interested in this opportunity. What else do you need from me in order to move on to the next step?”
· Know why you are actually interested. Be prepared with two or three key points that you like about the position.

In order for you to act interested (or show energy) you actually have to
Be Interesting, which is the next point.
· This is tough to express how to do this. This ties back to the non-verbal rules in the “C” or Interviewing T.E.C.H.N.I.Q.U.E.S. Body language expresses that you are engaged in the conversation coupled with positive listening responses.
· Find something about yourself that shows that you are interesting. I was in an interview today with a person and they were totally boring me. Have you ever had that before? The person must have stared at me with the glazed look followed by the “uh huh” at least 40 times. Come on. Maybe they were planning on slamming a few Starbucks skinny vanilla vente latte but due to the economic cutbacks could not find an open Starbucks. We only have three within 2 miles of our office. Next time just go another two blocks down Chagrin Blvd and you are sure to find one. Sorry for the rabbit trail, to find something of interest you have to be able to engage with the interviewer, learn about them, find out what they are interested in and then relate with them on what is interesting to them. Does that make sense? Email me with questions and I would be glad to take some time with you.
