How to Deal with a 50% Unemployment Rate
Which side are you on? Picking on the younger generation for a minute…in Europe 40% of people between the ages of 16 – 24 are unemployed. In the US, it is even worse. Over 50% of people ages 16 – 24 are without a job. So again I ask you…what side are you on?
WHY?
There are some obvious trends. America is in somewhat of a difficult economic hardship. Some of the reason that there are a lot more unemployed GEN-X ‘ers is the fact that middle age and older people are also hurting and unemployed so that take on ANY job to take care of their family. I have to say that at times I have thought about delivering pizza to help supplement.
THE FACTS:
When students graduate during a bad time they careers are negatively effective for several years. They individuals are more prone to be stuck in dead in jobs, and it is estimated that their wages will be LOWER for the next 15 years. That’s right, I unfortunately said years. College graduates will be at the front of this curve however they will still be on the curve.
SO NOW WHAT?
We will get through this. There is a time and a season for everything and this too shall pass. You have to commit today that you will make the most of this experience and not turn into a crochety-grouchy young bear. Since the facts are the facts, what can we do? How can we make the most of this?
- Develop additional skills. Masters Degree attendance and applications are climbing quickly as people are continuing to develop their skills and abilities. Human Resources professionals are loving the fact there there are so many more qualified people.
- IMPROVE YOUR INTERVIEWING SKILLS! I am not sure that I can blow the horn loud enough on this fact. Since there are so many people vying for the same job, this is the ONLY differentiating skill you truly have. Absorb as much information as you can and make sure you RSS this site: www.theinterviewgurus.com/the-blog
- “Starvation is the creator of Innovation“ Start your own business no matter how small it may be. Follow your passions, do something that can help you diversify. There are so many possible options.
I know that this is somewhat of a difficult post to even read. We are going to get through this.
