How to Answer Interview Question: “What do you do in your spare time?”

What do you do in your spare time?

What is the motive behind this question?  I do not see this as a guaranteed interview question and is not used by many however it is one that I personally love to ask.  It really helps me determine what type of person and potential advantages or disadvantages their “spare time” can bring.  There is a great bible verse in the book of Matthew 6:21 that comes to mind…”For where your treasure it, there your heart will be also.”  If an individual is truly passionate about their industry, business or position, what books, articles, trade journals, or blogs have they read lately?  Are they actively seeking to know their space.

A good friend of mine, who is an SEO Manager,  IM’d me the other day and asked, “Do you ever feel like you hit a glass ceiling?”  In our conversation, he expressed that he feels like there is so much to know, so much to do and so much potential that he just can’t seem to just get there.  That is a great attitude to where his passion is.  Guess what he does in his “free time”?  He studies the industry, reads blogs, tests ideas.  He is engaged.

Enough of my tangent.

Q: “What do you do in your spare time?”

A: “I am very involved in my work however I attempt to find a good work/life balance.  I read and study trends and techniques to up my game and attend user groups.  Personally, I have a great family and we like to go hiking in the park.  When I am not engrossed in work and family time, I see to it that go cycling. ”

I don’t know your exact response however it should portray a mix of professional interest and personal passions.  Do you have a life?  Well, try to express it in 3 sentences or less.

MUCH SUCCESS!
