Blog Action Day – Incentive for Change

By admin • October 15th, 2008

We all need an incentive to change or incentive for ACTION. Throw in some charitable cause or topic that is close to the heart, mix in a little blogging and social media and I am in!

WHAT is Blog Action Day? “Today thousands of blogger will unite to discuss a single issue – poverty. We aim to raise awareness, initiate action and to shake the web.”
I found out about this activity through a social medium (twitter post from @adamcohen), checked out the site and must say that it seemed a worthwhile cause.

FACTS about Poverty in Cleveland:

  • Cleveland is the poorest big city in the United States, according to the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, 2007.
  • Nearly a third of the city’s residents are living in poverty. (The poverty line is defined by the federal government as an income of less than $18,660 in 2003 for a family of four)
  • The poverty rate rose in Cleveland, from 27 percent in 2006, and the city moved from fourth to second worst. Still, Cleveland did not rank as the nation’s poorest big city, as it did in 2003

What can we do to help?
I have the fortune for working for a great Cleveland based company, Rosetta. A couple of weeks ago I posted a blog entry talking about a company wide event that we did to donate food and clothing for a local charity. Rosetta employees were able to generate just under 9,000 lbs of food and clothing for the Mission of St. Vincent De Paul Society which you can connect here to learn how to donate. Or for an ONLINE DONATION to the Cleveland Foodbank (http://www.clevelandfoodbank.org/) click here. It is a great service especially given the season. I hope and pray that my donation, be it small, will be able to help ease someone’s pain.

WE can make a difference. If you are not from Cleveland, click here to donate in your local city.
