7 Differentiators to Getting Hired – Experiential

Differentiator #4 is Experiential.

As a continuation to the series of 7 Differentiators to Getting Hired inspired by the well respected Don Hutson we get the opportunity to discuss how you can separate yourself from the people competing for the same job you are through creating an experience.

You know when you meet someone and after the conversation is over you walk away saying, “wow that person was super cool” or just the opposite feeling too like “wierdo!”    That right there is experiential!

So, how can I, ordinary guy, make for a dynamic, memorable and engaging experience with a potential hiring authority, human resource person, friend, referral, networking event, etc.?

1. A virtual mentor of mine, Charlie “Tremendous” Jones, was well known for coining the phrase, “In five years you will be combination of the books you read and the people you meet.“   So I know this is a simple but complex point, but surround yourself with positive people.  Get your attitude right before you meet someone.  Remember, the outcome of our attitude is derived from our choice.  Abraham Lincoln said, “A man is as happy as he chooses to be.“  If Abe said it, it has to be true.

2. The second point to Mr Tremendous above is the books you read.  Pick up a book for yourself called “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie.  Long time best seller.  This will teach you how to give people the feeling of a great “experience.”  Most people love to talk about themselves and have a sign around their neck that says, “Make me feel important”.

3. Know what your differentiators really are.  Have as ammunition to your verbal gun quantifiable examples like we talked about in previously in this post.  Know your product.

4. Be yourself.  An interview should lean more to the side of a conversation and less of an interrogation on one person’s behalf.  Have fun, be yourself.

To recap…positive attitude, read good books, know your product, be yourself.

I wish you much success in differentiating yourself from the pack.
