3 Myths About Finding a Job in Today’s Market
There are at least 17,248 myths that I can randomly pop off the top of my head about finding a job in today’s ever changing job landscape. I decided to narrow that down to three for palatability. Whether you are seeking a job as a sales person, creative or search marketing professional, direct response guru , new college grad or experienced executive, the story is the same.
Myth #1 – You are good enough that the right (or perfect dream job) will find me.
Myth #2 - I am the only person that is being interviewed for this job
Myth #3 – I can wing it. I can wing the resume together, I can wing the interview without preparation, I can land this job just because I didn’t have to prepare in the past.
I love my career. I get entertained by so many stories of people attempting to navigate the mine field on their own without soliciting help from the the people on the other side with all of their limbs in tact.

Who is guiding your step?
The majority of the people today are risk-adverse. The consider themselves to be passively open to the right opportunity if it were to come along. There is a sense of aggression that one needs to take to be networked with the right people at the right time. Have you ever noticed how senior executives just change jobs? You never see an ad posted, a sign in the window, a link posted on linkedin or the company website. The only thing we see is the press release saying John Doe takes over as CEO of Digitas or whatever marketing agency or branded company it may be. These executives do not site back and wait for the opportunities to come to them. What I mean is that they are always open to have strategic relationships with people they feel can get them to where the want to go. They keep an eye out. Believe me, many of times they say no to things that arise and that is OK. But they are in the right place at the right time.
We are not the only ones applying for a job these days. In a small Ohio town, a company posted an ad in the newspaper for goodness sakes and they received over 700 resumes for a Janitor position. The other day I posted an article outlining a chart by simply hired demonstrating the best chance you have right now in America is a 10 to 1 shot. The competition is fierce and that is what leads us into myth #3.
Winging an interview is not only a top myth but could be the #1 reason why some people live the life of their dreams and some people live a life of obligation, working a job they don’t like with people they tolerate. Interviewing is the key to a better lifestyle, a better pocketbook, a better opportunity at life. I mention this in all sincerity.
I wish you much success.
